The Unleashed Growth of AI: Confronting the Challenges and Securing Our Future.

Our political leaders must acknowledge the real threat AI development poses and its impact on the world economies with its use and development unchecked. The existential challenge of adapting to a changing world requires a comprehensive political approach that engages policymakers, government agencies, industry leaders, educational institutions, and the general public. Here, I outline critical considerations for a high-level political strategy that can effectively address the implications of AI and automation.

Governments must develop policies and regulations that facilitate responsible and ethical AI development, deployment, and usage. Key issues such as data privacy, algorithmic transparency, liability, and accountability need to be addressed. Striking the right balance between innovation and societal well-being is paramount in creating a regulatory environment conducive to AI advancements.

Prioritizing education and skills development is crucial to equip the workforce for the AI-driven economy. Updating educational curricula to include AI-related subjects, promoting STEM education, and fostering partnerships between academia and industry is essential to aligning skill sets with industry needs.

Implementing robust reskilling and upskilling programs is vital to support individuals transitioning to new job roles. Collaborations between governments, educational institutions, and industry stakeholders can provide accessible and affordable training programs. Financial incentives such as tax credits or grants can encourage businesses to invest in workforce training and facilitate smoother transitions.

Collaboration and partnerships among diverse stakeholders are crucial for driving innovation and developing best practices in AI implementation. Multi-stakeholder forums, advisory boards, and public-private partnerships can facilitate dialogue, knowledge sharing, and coordination to leverage the collective expertise of industry, academia, and civil society organizations.

Strengthening the social safety net is essential to support individuals impacted by job displacement. Expanding unemployment benefits, providing job placement services, and implementing income support mechanisms are vital components of a comprehensive strategy.

Exploring universal basic income or targeted assistance programs can further bolster the social safety net. Governments should prioritize developing and deploying AI technologies that adhere to ethical principles and promote inclusivity. Ensuring fairness, transparency, and accountability in AI systems is crucial to avoid perpetuating biases or discriminatory practices. Public consultations, ethical guidelines, and independent oversight bodies can ensure responsible AI development and deployment.

Governments should proactively monitor and analyze the impact of AI on the labor market and the economy. By my rough estimation built from the 2020 census and the impacted job markets, leveraging or developing AI to perform those jobs. Adding up the approximate numbers mentioned for each category, the cumulative estimate for the number of people in the United States performing these activities That AI could and will eliminate:

3.7 million (Cashier Duties) 12.2 million (Food Service and Hospitality) (No specific data available for Stocking and Inventory) 2.5 million (Cleaning and Janitorial Tasks) (No specific data available for Housekeeping and Maintenance) 9.7 million (Assembly Line or Production Work) (No specific data available for Data Entry and Administrative Tasks) 4.6 million (Retail Sales) 3.3 million (Customer Support) =

Approximately 36 million people (estimated) in the United States are performing these activities. That will be impacted. And will require retraining.

Policymakers must anticipate potential job disruptions and economic transitions. Resource allocation and strategic decision-making must be made at the highest levels. Economic diversification strategies and targeted investments in emerging sectors can contribute to a smoother transition.

What can we expect if we do not stay ahead of the development of AI in our economy and during Industry changes? We will see reduced consumer Spending: Unemployment can decrease consumer spending as individuals have less disposable income. This can impact businesses, especially those reliant on consumer demand, such as retail, hospitality, and entertainment.

Decreased Tax Revenues can be expected. Due to reduced personal income and consumption-based taxes, unemployment will reduce government tax revenues. This can affect public services and government spending capabilities.

There will be an Increased Government Expenditure. Governments could incur additional expenses when unemployment rises. This includes costs associated with unemployment benefits, social safety net programs, and retraining initiatives to support unemployed individuals.

There will be an economic slowdown: High unemployment rates can and will contribute to an economic slowdown or recession. Reduced consumer spending, business investment, and economic activity can lead to lower GDP growth.

There will be long-term Effects on Human Capital: Prolonged unemployment can have long-lasting effects on individuals' skills, employability, and future earnings potential. This can result in a loss of human capital for the economy.

Social and Psychological Impacts Unemployment can have significant social and psychological consequences on individuals and communities. Because of their job displacements from AI, poverty, inequality, social unrest, and adverse health outcomes will increase.
